HUDSON OPERA THEATRE Jasper Francis Cropsey: “Autumn on Greenwood Lake”

September 26 & 27

Mass in C, Op. 86

Symphony No. 6

“Pastoral” Op. 68

BEETHOVEN

By way of explanation of his rather nonconformist sixth symphony, the “Pastoral”, Beethoven himself wrote: it is “more the expression of feeling than painting.” Throughout its length, it evokes images and feelings of a fundamental human appreciation of the beauties of nature and of an unhurried life. In a similar way, his Mass in C major evokes images of the ethereal quality of life and, too, the elation of the life well-lived. The simple, elegant beauty of these two pieces are a delightful complement to one another. In fact, the premier of the 6th Symphony in 1808, conducted by the composer himself, included a number of excerpts of the Mass in C major.
